How UWA’s “Friend a Gorilla” campaign changed conservation efforts by using social media to connect people with endangered gorillas.
With only 720 mountain gorillas left in the world, over half of which reside in Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) recognised the urgent need to raise awareness and funds for their protection. The “Friend a Gorilla” campaign addressed this need by leveraging the growing power of social media to engage a global audience and inspire action for conservation.
The UWA commissioned QG to create a website enabling individuals to symbolically ‘friend’ a gorilla for a $1 donation, leveraging social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to raise awareness and inspire financial contributions for mountain gorilla conservation. The site also provided updates on gorillas, including GPS tracking data from field trackers.
